  1. 2008 Election Results

    Balloting for the 2008 CESS elections, which closed on 15 April, yielded the following new leaders for our organization:

  2. Website interruption
    The CESS website was intentionally taken off-line from approximately 4:30 p.m. Thursday, February 28 until 3:30 p.m. Friday, February 29 for technical reasons. We apologize for the inconvenience and will restore missing portions of the site as soon as possible.
  3. CESS has a New Treasurer and Secretary
    CESS is pleased to announce the confirmation of Sylvia Babus (Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Washington, DC) as CESS Treasurer, and Kimairis L. Toogood (George Mason University, Fairfax, VA) as CESS Secretary.

  4. CESS is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2007 Book Award and Best Graduate Student Paper Award
    The Book Award went to Marianne Kamp (University of Wyoming) for her monograph, The New Woman in Uzbekistan: Islam, Modernity, and Unveiling under Communism. The Graduate Student Paper Award went to Julie McBrien (Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology) for her paper "On Push-Up Bras and Headscarves: Experiencing Multiple Modernities in Kyrgyzstan."

  5. Eighth CESS Annual Conference held at the University of Washington-Seattle, Oct. 18-21, 2007
    Many thanks to those of you who made this year's conference a great success! The 2007 Annual Conference was hosted by the University of Washington-Seattle.

  6. The CESS Secretariat Has a New Director
    The CESS Secretariat has moved to its new host at Miami University's Havighurst Center.

  7. CESS Establishes Relationship with Central Asian Survey
    From 2007, CESS members are eligible to subscribe to Central Asian Survey at the much-reduced annual rate of $40.  CESS is also represented on Central Asian Survey's Editorial Board and International Advisory Board (see details).

  8. CESS Elections for President-Elect and Executive Board Completed and New Honorary Members Announced
    On April 5, 2007, CESS announced the newly elected members of the Executive Board -- Philippe Forêt and Deniz Kandiyoti -- and President-Elect, Edward Lazzerini.  In addition, the CESS Board elected four new Honorary Members: C. Edmund Bosworth, Boris Anatol'evich Litvinskii, Vladimir Aronovich Livshits and Morris Rossabi.  See the announcement for details.

  9. Annual CESS Book Award Competition Is Announced
    In February 2007, CESS announces its new competiton for the annual CESS Book Award.  The award honors the work that represents the most important contribution to Central Eurasian studies, or that holds the greatest potential for furthering scholarship on the Central Eurasian region.  In alternate years, awards are granted in a) History & Humanities, and b) Social Sciences, beginning with History & Humanities in 2007.  The deadline for submissions for 2007 is April 1, 2007.  For details, see the CESS awards webpage, or contact the 2007 Book Awards Committee Chair: Dr. Douglas Northrop <northrop(a)umich.edu>.

  10. Annual CESS Award for Best Graduate Student Conference Paper
    An award honoring the best graduate student paper contributed to CESS Annual Conference is granted annually by the CESS Awards Committee.  The deadline for submissions for 2007 is Sept. 21, 2007.  The 2006 award recipient was Madeleine Reeves.  For details, see the CESS awards webpage, or contact the Awards Committee Co-chairs: Dr. Douglas Northrop <northrop(a)umich.edu> and Dr. Uli Schamiloglu <uschamil(a)wisc.edu>.
